Apple opens first official store in Southeast Asia

Apple opened its first store in Southeast Asia in Singapore on Saturday, drawing hundreds of excited fans to the two-story luxury venue in the city's upscale shopping district. The new store, easily distinguished by its iconic glass façade, is expected to be one of Apple's most popular stores in the world, according to the technology giant.

Goods like the iPhone and MacBook were strategically placed on the screen on the spacious first floor, while the upper level acted as a classroom for customers to participate in hands-on sessions. Hundreds of shoppers camped in anticipation of the launch, while more than a thousand crowded into the store shortly after the doors opened, an AFP reporter observed.

First in line was Xiang Jiaxin, a twenty-five-year-old Chinese Chinese who worked in Macao and who had queued for more than 12 hours overnight and planned a vacation to Singapore especially to coincide with the opening.

"I am very happy and excited to be part of this. I have participated in official store openings in Macao, Guangzhou and Nanjing," he told AFP. Apple, which has a staggering cash of $ 256.8 billion, celebrated its 40th anniversary last year. The legend of the Silicon Valley emerged from the garage of Steve Jobs to reshape modern life with trend gadgets.

Most of its profits come from the iPhone, which faces increasingly tough competition in a saturated market. The technology giant has nearly 500 stores worldwide with more than one million visitors a day. Apart from Singapore, its Asian stores are located in Hong Kong, China and Japan. A regional transportation, business and financial center, Singapore attracted 16.4 million visitors last year.

The Apple boss alludes to augmented reality for the iPhone

Apple CEO Tim Cook is a fan of augmented reality. He has made no secret that he thinks he will truncate virtual reality, even saying that the use of RA will eventually be as common as "eating three meals a day."

Today, we've gotten more from Apple's boss in what he thinks of AR, and while we're still waiting for a particular device that projects digital images in the real world from the iPhone maker, it seems like it's just a matter of Now.

Cook talked to The Independent during his visit to the UK this week, and in the interview Cook said he prefers AR about VR because "it allows people to be present in the world but hopefully it will allow an improvement in what is happening now" .

"Most people do not want to shut themselves out of the world for a long period of time and today they can not do it because they get sick for it," Cook said about VR. "With AR you can not be absorbed in something, but be part of your world, your conversation, that resonates."

In particular, Cook probably compared AR with the largest consumer electronic device on the planet:

"I see it as a great idea as the smartphone," he said. "The smartphone is for everyone, we do not have to think that the iPhone is about a particular market, demographic, national or vertical: it's for everyone, I think AR is so big, it's huge."

"I'm thrilled by the things that could be done to improve many lives and be entertaining," continued Cook. "I see AR as I see the silicon here on my iPhone, it's not a product per se, it's a basic technology."

Hints for Apple's future in the AR

Once again, Cook has talked about his enthusiasm for AR before, so there is no new revelation there. But dig a little deeper, and we have some clues on how Apple could approach the technology, if ever.

Cook sounds eager for AR to be both useful and enjoyable, perhaps with applications for education, medicine and the workplace, along with leisure activities such as games. It also seems to prefer something with transparent lenses, similar to Microsoft HoloLens, which allows users to stay committed to what is happening around them while interacting with an AR overlay.

Or maybe as 9to5Mac points out, Apple really is not working on a new device at all, but rather developing more AR functions for the iPhone.

"I think there may be a lot of things that really help people in everyday life, things in real life, that's why I feel so excited," Cook told The Independent. What is more prevalent in our daily lives than our smartphones?

Will Apple Launch AR technology simliar to Google Tango?

The iPhone 8 is rumored to have AR capabilities, including adding 3D effects to photos, and we can see Apple developing AR technology similar to Google's Tango for phones and tablets, or the Daydream mobile VR platform.

Going on this route would allow Apple to dive into AR without having to build, market and sell a brand new product. In addition, Cook said he sees AR as a core technology, similar to silicon in a phone, suggesting that the AR iPhone could be applied to other categories, such as tablets, computers and TV.

All of this is certainly possible, although a recent report from VR / AR evangelist Robert Scoble, quoting sources "at the highest levels," points to the technology giant joining Carl Zeiss to develop augmented reality glasses and a VR / AR standalone device has been rumored to be under development at Apple for some time. Cook, of course, could be talking about smart glasses or another AR device as well.

Whatever Apple is working behind the scenes, it is likely to be some time before we see it in an official capacity. Cook ended his interview with a warning that there is still a way to go before AR is "good enough for the mainstream," suggesting Apple, as it usually does, will not launch a product until technology has reached a certain level Of maturity.

Apple launches watchOS 3.2; add theater mode and SiriKit

Apple has released a new beta update for watchOS, the operating system that is powering its Watch products. The update, watchOS 3.2 beta (14V52-5d) is available to developers to check out the latest features and upcoming code changes to update their applications. One thing to keep in mind is that the company has added two features, the first one is called "Theater Mode" and the other feature is called "SiriKit".

'Theater Mode' as suggested to get to the iPhone as part of iOS 10.3, but we did not see any concrete evidence that it expects tips on Twitter. This is the first time that Apple has officially mentioned 'Theater Mode' in the official changelog, but in watchOS. One thing to keep in mind is that the implementation of the theater mode is somewhat different and improves the existing 'Do Not Disturb' mode already available in watchOS.

The main thing is that this mode, when enabled, will prevent your Apple Watch from lighting in a dim situation such as a theater, a meeting or anything else unless you physically touch the portable device. This is very far from the "Do Not Disturb" mode where the screen would light up any time you move your arm. This feature mutes the sound of the device and users continue to receive notifications, including haptic feedback.

Another important feature is that Apple is opening Siri for third-party applications that will allow them to take advantage of the deep integration of Siri with the operating system to do things like aksing Siri to book a taxi, make payments among other things, which is more easier for Third-party application developers to extend the functionality of their applications.

Apple iPhone 7 on Jet White may arrive just in time for winter

After several rumors pointing to both Space Black and Deep Blue color options with this year's iPhone 7, Apple finally released its new iPhone in a new black (mate) and Jet Black options. But as a new rumor indicates, the technology giant may have left behind a special option of Pure White or Jet White to be released just in time for the holiday season.

According to the Japanese blog Macotakara, Apple could break its tradition and launch a special finish of the Pure White iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models just in time for the holiday season. The new comes from the supply which is reportedly one of the suppliers for the new model. However, take this information with a pinch of salt.

The new finish would obviously be special and according to the image filtered by the blog, it looks like the white version of the glossy finish Jet Black. Customers should expect fine scratch marks on this too!

The new option would simply extend the life of the iPhone 7's life and keep the hype alive until the devices of the tenth anniversary arrive next year.

Although it is not tradition for Apple to launch new color options after the first release, this year things may be a bit different. This looks more like a well calculated measure for the next quarter as Apple's latest quarterly earnings showed a 5.2 percent decline for iPhone sales compared to the third quarter of last year.
