Free wifi provided to 50 lakh people in 115 stations: it says railways minister



Free Wi-Fi services have been provided to 50 lakh passengers at 115 railway stations throughout the country and the railways propose to provide such facility in running trains too later, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Friday.

Responding to a question during question time, Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhu said that the implementation of the Wi-Fi facility at 400 railway stations has been entrusted to RailTel Corporation, a subsidiary of the Railways, without any allocation of funds By the government.

"The number of passengers using Wi-Fi services at all stations was about 50 lakh in February at 115 stations so far provided with Wi-Fi service," he said.

A total of 400 railway stations will be covered in the first lot and the criterion adopted to install the service depended on the volume in the stations.

Prabhu said the Wi-Fi facility, which is a public service, was not only provided to railway passengers but also to all station visits, including a large number of students.

"Of course, there is also a proposal to provide it on regular trains," he said, answering a question from a member, adding that the facility is already available on some trains.

"We'll try to do it on most trains," he said.

Prabhu said that the use of Wi-Fi in the stations was being regulated by the guidelines issued by the Department of Telecom and has not reported any case of violation of these guidelines.

"You follow all the DoT guidelines so you can not open any DoT banned websites," he said.

The Minister of Railways also said that the installation provided by Google was, according to them, "the largest and fastest public Wi-Fi in the world."

To another question about whether the seasons in the east would be covered, he said, "Because the sun rises in the east and we can not ignore the east."

In response to a question on the provision of solar panels on rooftops of trains, said railways have provided solar panels on the roofs of narrow 19 meters in Norther Railway and 4 wide-gauge non-air conditioning coaches in service for use Of electric power generated In the train lighting system tested, which would save a total of Rs. 41,000 crores over a period of 10 years.

"Indian railroads have embarked on a mission to save Rs 41,000 crores over a period of 10 years through efficient energy management and energy acquisition," he said.
